Welcome to the memorial page for

Johnnie Dell Cordle

December 4, 1938 ~ September 2, 2017 (age 78)

Johnnie Dell Christian Cordle, Age 78, of Rome, GA died on September 2 surrounded by all of her loved ones.

She was born on December 4,1938 in Chattooga County Hospital to parents John Price Christian and Burta Adele Young Christian.  Childhood years were spent in west Rome on Cherry and DeSoto streets with her sister, Rebecca Diane Fuller.  Her family moved to Texas Valley in their early childhood where she and Becky picked cotton, rode wagons and bicycles, played paper dolls and attended Armuchee School.  At Antioch Baptist Church, she met Ruben Hubert Cordle, whom she would marry in 1956.  Their marriage would last almost 60 years, ending only with the death of Hubert in 2016.  After graduating from Armuchee High in 1957, she moved to Big Texas Valley where she bore three children:  Emmett Price, Joanna Elizabeth and Rachel Christian.  She was a beautiful young mother and taught her children to read, sing, cook, and explore their interests.  In 1979, their home was displaced by the Rock Mountain Project, and her family moved to Coosa where she lived until her death.  She began working for the Inland Credit Union in 1967, then for Coosa Valley Credit Union where she ultimately became Vice President of Operations.  She continued to work there until her passing completing over 50 years of employment.

From 1982 until 2008, she welcomed six grandchildren:  Summer Elizabeth Lloyd Jones, Savannah Rachel Lloyd Cordle, Willem Haskell Perry, Joel David Perry, Joanna YuLan Cordle, and Adeline Xinya Cordle.  Her great grandchildren, Lleyton and Norah Cordle, were a blessing to her in her last decade.

Her life was temporarily upended by the unexpected loss of her daughter, Joanna Cordle Lloyd in 2002.  Johnnie cared for her aging parents at her home until their deaths in 2003 and 2009.  She also cared for her husband Hubert for many difficult months at their home until his passing in August, 2016.

Johnnie was involved as a Sunday School teacher and centennial organizer for Antioch and Sand Springs Baptist church.  She enjoyed playing ROOK with her in-laws Howard and Jewell Mathis and with her dear friends Scott and Linda Cordle.

She was an avid participant in square dancing in the 1980s at Western Promenaders.  At home, she loved to read, work puzzles, discuss politics, watch and re-watch old movies and laugh incessantly at her favorite sit-coms.  She was famous for her baked beans, cornbread and spaghetti.  She loved to buy things for and dote on her grandchildren, and she is remembered for humming and for enjoying pedicures with her granddaughters.

Visitation is slated for 12:30pm on Wednesday, September 6 at Miller and Richard’s Oaknoll Chapel, followed by an informal service at 2:00pm.
